By Grace Alone: A Message of Unmerited Favor

This past Sunday, Pastor Victor Otieno Odhiambo, of Bethel Fellowship Centre and President of Jehovah Saints International in Kenya, shared a profound sermon on one of the most foundational truths of the Christian faith—grace. Grace is more than a kind gesture; it is God's unearned, undeserved love and empowerment toward us.

What Is Grace?

Pastor Victor began by simplifying the meaning of grace: it’s a gift. Something we didn’t work for and could never earn. Grace is God's way of saying, “I love you,” even when we fall short. It is not about our performance but about God’s goodness.

> “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8

This verse reminds us that salvation is not something we achieve. We don’t earn heaven by doing enough good deeds. Instead, we are saved simply because God chose to love us and extend mercy when we didn’t deserve it.

Grace at Work in Our Lives

Pastor Victor then pointed to 1 Corinthians 15:10, where the apostle Paul reflects on how grace transformed his life:

> “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain…”

Paul was once a persecutor of the church, but grace changed his path. He didn’t try to cover up his past—instead, he gave glory to God for rescuing and repurposing him. Pastor Victor explained that grace not only saves us, but empowers us to live, work, and grow in our faith. It’s the energy behind our purpose.

Grace doesn’t mean we don’t try; it means we don’t have to try alone.

Grace and Mercy: Saved, Not by Works

In Titus 3:5, we find a beautiful contrast between our efforts and God's mercy:

> “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us…”

Pastor Victor highlighted this truth: God didn’t save us because we did everything right—He saved us because He is kind and compassionate. This removes pressure and pride. It levels the playing field so anyone—no matter their past—can receive God's gift of new life.

Living in Grace Today

This message is a call to walk boldly, not because we are perfect, but because grace covers us. It teaches us to extend that same grace to others: forgive freely, love deeply, and serve humbly.

> “Therefore let us come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” — Hebrews 4:16

Grace invites us in, holds us steady, and sends us out renewed.
