Archbishop Nathaniel Gbah of Jehovah Saints Church in Liberia, Africa, shares a powerful message inspired by the scriptures—a message of hope, joy, and the many ways Jesus Christ reveals Himself to us. His words remind us of the profound significance of Jesus' names and titles and how they meet our every need. As the Angel of the Lord declared to the shepherds on that holy night:
"Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people." (Luke 2:10)
Let us explore the richness of this message through the scriptures and the enduring power of Jesus' name.
The Angel’s Announcement: Good Tidings of Great Joy
In Luke 2:8-12, we are invited into the scene where the Angel of the Lord appears to shepherds in the field, proclaiming the birth of Jesus Christ. The angel calls this announcement "good tidings of great joy," a promise that extends to all people. This declaration of joy is not just a historical moment but a timeless assurance that Jesus came to bring hope, peace, and salvation to every person, regardless of their circumstances.
The angel’s words remind us that Jesus is the ultimate bearer of good news. As Isaiah 61:1 says, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek.” In Jesus, every bad news, sorrow, or pain can be transformed into joy and hope.
Introducing Jesus: The God of Many Names
In public gatherings, it is customary to introduce special guests or dignitaries. However, introducing Jesus Christ is no simple task. His identity is so vast, so multifaceted, that every encounter with Him reveals a new aspect of His character and purpose.
Matthew 1:21 declares, “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins.” This name alone—Jesus—carries the promise of salvation. But Jesus doesn’t stop at one name. Each time He reveals Himself, He introduces a new title that reflects His role in our lives.
The Word of God (John 1:1)
The Lamb of God (John 1:29)
The Door (John 10:9)
The Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25)
The Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6)
Sometimes, Jesus combines multiple titles to show His greatness. For instance, in Isaiah 9:6, He is described as:"Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."
On other occasions, He introduces Himself with even more names, as seen in Revelation 1:8:"I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty."
Jesus is truly the God of many names, each one revealing a unique aspect of His divine nature and purpose.
Why So Many Names?
Why does Jesus have so many names and titles? The answer lies in His desire to meet each of our needs. Every name He bears is needs-driven, designed to address the specific challenges, struggles, and desires we face in life.
For example:
If you are lost, He is The Way (John 14:6).
If you are broken, He is The Healer (Exodus 15:26).
If you are burdened, He is The Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
If you are in darkness, He is The Light of the World (John 8:12).
Jesus’ names are a reflection of His ability to meet every need, no matter how great or small. As Philippians 2:9-10 reminds us:"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow."
Good Tidings for You
When the angel introduced Jesus to the shepherds, he called Him “Good Tidings of Great Joy.” This title is a promise that Jesus came to turn sorrow into joy, pain into healing, and bad news into good news.
What bad news have you received that has brought you sorrow, discouragement, or pain? Whatever it may be, Jesus is here to absorb your sorrow and replace it with joy. As Psalm 30:5 declares, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
This season, take hold of the promise of Luke 2:10. Believe that Jesus, the Good Tidings of Great Joy, will bring good news into your life. He will cancel every bad report and replace it with hope, healing, and restoration.
Jesus Christ is the God of many names, each one revealing His power, love, and ability to meet our needs. He is the Good Tidings of Great Joy, sent to bring hope and salvation to all people. Whatever challenges you face, trust in the name of Jesus, for His name is above every name, and His promises are sure.
This season, may you experience the joy, peace, and good news that Jesus brings. In His mighty name, may every sorrow be turned into joy, and every need be met. Amen.
"Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people." (Luke 2:10)
