Sermon Reflection: You Are More Valuable Than You Think
Scripture Reference: Luke 15:11-32
Evangelist Joshim of Jehovah Saints Ministry in Bangladesh shared a powerful sermon today, reminding us of the immense value God places on each of us.
Key Message:
God loves everyone, even the most wretched sinner. His love for us surpasses our understanding, yet He hates sin because of the harm it causes us. The parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) beautifully illustrates God’s mercy, love, and forgiveness.
Parable of the Prodigal Son:
In this parable, Jesus tells the story of a younger son who demands his inheritance before his father’s death. By doing so, the son rejects his father and his family. He squanders his wealth on reckless living, eventually becoming destitute and hungry. At his lowest point, he envies the pigs that have more food than he does. Realizing his mistake, the son decides to return home, expecting to be treated as a servant rather than a son.
However, the father’s response is astonishing. Instead of rejecting his son, the father welcomes him back with open arms. Jesus describes the moment:"And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him." (Luke 15:20)
This act of mercy and love defies cultural norms of the time. A householder would never run out to meet someone, especially a wayward son. Yet, the father’s actions reflect God’s heart—overflowing with compassion and forgiveness.
The father not only accepts his son back into the family but celebrates his return with a grand feast. This celebration symbolizes the joy in heaven when a sinner repents and turns back to God.
Lessons from the Parable:
God’s Mercy and Love:The father’s unconditional love mirrors God’s boundless mercy and grace. No matter how far we stray, God is always ready to welcome us back when we repent.
Supporting Scripture:
"The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love." (Psalm 103:8)
"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." (Luke 19:10)
Warning for the “Older Son” (the Congregation):The older son represents those who remain faithful but struggle with jealousy and self-righteousness. His anger at the celebration reveals a lack of understanding of his father’s love and mercy. This serves as a warning to those in the congregation to avoid pride and judgment.
Supporting Scripture:
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged." (Matthew 7:1)
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)
The Value of Repentance:The prodigal son’s return reminds us that repentance restores our relationship with God. No sin is too great for God’s forgiveness.
Supporting Scripture:
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)
"Come now, let us settle the matter,' says the Lord. 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow." (Isaiah 1:18)
This parable challenges us to reflect on our own lives:
Are we like the prodigal son, needing to repent and return to God?
Or are we like the older son, struggling with pride and resentment?
God values each of us more than we can imagine. His love is unconditional, and He desires for us to experience His mercy and grace. Let us strive to live in gratitude for His forgiveness and extend that same mercy to others.
